A Taiwanese photographer Will Ho, travelled to the Maldives on a holiday. What he saw amazed him. As he walked around relaxing in the evening, he couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the Maldives beach glowing as far as the eye could see. As he walked along the incredible stretch of beach covered in millions of bioluminescent phytoplankton he took these wonderful photographs documenting his wonderful experience. It looks like millions of fireflies have landed on the beach.
The bioluminescent phytoplankton stretches across the beach and moves in a hypnotic rhythm with every wave that comes in. You can see the lines on the sand as the waves have come in. the lines of colour are amazing. Look how bright the beach glows compared to the lights in the distance.
The bioluminescent phytoplankton form the most beautiful shapes as the water molds the organisms to create wonderful natural art. It truly is a wonder of nature.
You can even stand in it and you can see the glowing footprints in the beach sand. As you put your foot down the light shines around your foot, lighting it up.
This must be the best way to tell someone you love them. It must a lovely surprise to get a personal valentines message on the beach, by your partner writing a glowing message in the sand!
These tiny organisms glow similar to fireflies and tend to emit light when stressed, such as when waves crash or when they or otherwise are agitated. Bioluminescent also occurs in Fungi and in marine invertebrates and vertebrates such as what we see on the beach.
I am adding this to my bucket list, I would love to see this close up and experience this bioluminescent phytoplankton wonder of nature! I would like to write my own personal message in the sand.
